Q: Who has to take ACCUPLACER?
A: In order to take an English Composition course at Worcester State University, students must complete the placement test prior to registration. Students will be placed into English Composition courses according to their English placement scores. Scores will be automatically converted to an English code which will be recorded in the University database (along with the original) scores. The English code allows the University to enforce the initial prerequisite.

A: Accuplacer provides you essential information about your skill levels in reading, writing, and mathematics. Your scores will indicate whether you are ready for college-level studies or need to take one or more preparatory courses. Since your test results will help determine your initial course placements, you should take Accuplacer seriously. After testing, you and your advisor will discuss your results and build your course schedule. Placement in the correct coursework will help ensure your success at Worcester State University.
Q: What should I do to prepare for ACCUPLACER?
- LEARN ABOUT THE TEST. The Student Guide to Accuplacer provides valuable information regarding the parts that make up the test, the order in which the parts are administered, the number of items in each part or test, the tests content and item types, and the computer-adaptive mode of test delivery. Read this information carefully.
- ONCE YOU KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT, TAKE TIME TO PRACTICE. The Student Guide provides you a description and sample items for each part of the test.
- WHEN YOU COME FOR TESTING, arrive on time, bring picture identification (a student I.D., passport, or driver's license is acceptable), and allow yourself two hours to complete the test. A pencil and scratch paper will be provided. A calculator will be made available on-screen for selected items.
- FINALLY, USE ACCUPLACER'S TUTORIAL TO YOUR ADVANTAGE. When you arrive to test, you will complete a computer tutorial before the actual test begins. This tutorial will permit you to try out the computer's functions (e.g., the mouse, the scroll bar) that you will need to use during the test. You may spend as much time as you need to become familiar and comfortable with the computer before you begin testing. Don't start until you are ready.
Q: How long does ACCUPLACER take?
A: Although the test is not timed, most students are able to complete Accuplacer in two hours.
