Undergraduate Commencement Day:
Saturday, May 18th
10 a.m. Doors to seating open; DCU Center (Major Taylor Blvd., Worcester)
10 a.m. Degree candidates must report to the DCU Center's THIRD FLOOR BALLROOM. Here you should check-in and obtain an index card with your name. At this time, all graduates should put on their caps and gowns. (Tassel should be situated on the right side.)
Hold on to your index card! During the commencement ceremony, you will hand your card to the Dean of their School as you begin to cross the stage.
11 a.m. Students will line up in pairs, according to School.
The line-up begins with the School of Education, Health and Natural Sciences, and then the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Flag bearers will lead majors in each program. Although students' names appear in alphabetical order in the program, crossing the stage does not. If you wish to be seated next to someone in your degree program, line up in front of that person.
11:30 a.m. The procession begins promptly at 11:30 a.m.
The ceremony includes the academic procession, the commencement address, the awarding of honorary degrees, recognition of faculty emeriti, recognition of degree candidates by School and major, and the granting of degrees by the Board of Trustees.
Senior class marshals will direct baccalaureate degree candidates to the stage to receive their degrees, after which graduates should return to their assigned seats. Class officers, marshals and other undergraduates on the platform will receive their degrees last and will lead their classmates in the changing of the tassel from right to left.
12 p.m. The ceremony begins.
Receiving Your Diploma
Please stay with your major so that your parents and friends will know when you are receiving your degree. When you walk across the stage to receive your diploma covers, you must hand your index card to the Dean reading graduates’ names and any academic honors information stamped on the card. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU KEEP YOUR INDEX CARD UNTIL YOU HAND IT TO A DEAN.
After you receive your certificate, it is imperative that you return to your seat and remain seated until the ceremony is completed. It is basic courtesy not to disrupt Commencement for those who have not yet received their certificate.
At the conclusion of the benediction, individuals should leave the area in the following order: the platform party, faculty, administrators, graduates and members of the audience.
Graduates are requested to remain in their seats to take part in the recessional.
To assure an orderly and safe program, no food or drink should be brought into the area, and only officially appointed photographers will be allowed to approach the stage to take pictures. Family members and friends will have ample opportunity to take pictures before and after the ceremony.
