Helen Shuster was born in England but has lived in the United States for most of her adult life. She was a librarian at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) for 32 years and director of the WPI library from 1993 to 2007. After retiring she began looking for local volunteer opportunities that had meaning and purpose for her and that she hoped would add value to the community.
After learning about the Commonwealth Corps at Worcester State College she was very attracted to a program that assisted elders with food stamp applications. She pursued the program and was accepted as a volunteer.
Helen is impressed with the dedication and enthusiasm of the group, grateful for the opportunity to work with them and to learn more about the issues of hunger. She is delighted to be participating in a program that has such a beneficial impact in the community.
