  • Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy - in the Oxford Reference Online collection: over 3,000 entries cover every aspect of philosophy from Aristotle to Zen. Entries include over 500 biographies of famous and influential philosophers, in-depth analysis of philosophical terms and concepts, a chronology of philosophical events stretching from 10,000 BC to the present day, and coverage of themes from Chinese, Indian, Islamic, and Jewish philosophy. 
  • Dictionary of Buddhism - in the Oxford Reference Online collection: with over 2,000 entries, this dictionary features broad-ranging entries on the history and doctrines of the major Buddhist schools, information on the spread of Buddhism in Asia and the West, and coverage of issues of contemporary concern such as human rights, abortion, euthanasia, ‘engaged Buddhism’, and the role of women in Buddhist teachings.
  • Religion and Philosophy CollectionProvides extensive coverage of world religions, religious history, epistemology, political philosophy, philosophy of language, moral philosophy and the history of philosophy. The Collection offers more than 300 full text journals, including more than 250 peer-reviewed titles, making it an essential tool for researchers and students of theology and philosophical studies. This database is updated daily.
  • Encyclopedia of Bioethics - available via the Gale Virtual Reference Library | Social Science section. This 3rd ed. (2004) 5 volume set covers a wealth of topics on the ethics of health professions, animal research, population control and the environment. Helps researchers to consider the impact of new scientific knowledge and its potential to harm or benefit present and future generations 
  • Search the Library's online catalog for over 3,500 titles in philosophy, including E-books. You can also access the collection of E-books from home. 
  • Free Dictionary of the History of Ideas - Studies of selected pivotal ideas.Full-text of the out-of-print book edited by Philip P. Wiener, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1973-74. Topics include nature, humanity, art, history, politics, religion and philosophy, math and logic. 
  • Public Affairs International.  Public affairs and worlds issues with coverage from 1972 to the present. An index to over 1/2 million articles, books, government documents, Internet sites and documents from more than 120 countries. Obviously useful for global issues such as affirmative action, AIDS, ethnicity, climate change, political persecution, women's rights, war and conflict, etc. 
  • Don't overlook the following print resource in the WSC Library: Philosopher's Index, 1969 to present. (shelved in the periodicals/Indexes area) Indexes over 300 journals, books and essays.

  • Alex: a Catalogue of Electronic Texts - full-text indexed collection of classic American and English literature as well as Western philosophy in the public domain and written or translated into English
  • Ask Philosophers - Search through the archived questions and over 1,000 answers, or ask a new one of your own.
  • Bioethics on the Web - From the National Institutes of Health. Includes research involving human participants and animals, medical and health care ethics, and the implications of applied genetics and biotechnology.
  • Dictionary of Philosophical Terms and Names - by Garth Kemerling. A concise guide to terms and names; brief entries; numerous links to other sources and sometimes to electronic texts; also contains a timeline
  • Dictionary of Philosophy of Mind - terms and concepts related to the philosophy of mind; searchable alphabetically by entry or by keyword in search engine for all occurrences of the keyword in various entries
  • Ethics Updates - contains links to documents about ethical theory and resources in the field of ethics. It also contains links to documents about applied ethics that cover such issues as abortion, animal rights, bioethics, poverty and welfare, and terrorism.
  • The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy - searchable by keyword, alphabetically by entry; or by timeline of Western Philosophy with links to entries
  • Philosophy Since the Enlightenment -
  • Sophia Project - Web based documents and programs to assist beginning philosophy students in discovering what philosophy is, how to work with difficult philosophical texts, and how to do basic research in the field. From Molloy College (NY).
  • The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy - begun 1995; by experts; continuous, refereed updating

Search Engines  - Meta Sites, gateways and portals

These are "gateway" sites: they don't have philosophy information, but link you to other sites that do.

  • Philosophy Research Base - Worldwide philosophy resources categorized by history, subject and author, this meta-index integrates text resources with the best online resources
  • Philosophy Databases - best in Internet resources in Philosophy selected, evaluated and chosen by subject experts. From the University of Oxford (continues the Humbul Humanities Web which is no longer maintained)
  • Sites Devoted to Individual Philosophers - 188 philosophers; also links to general sites and e-texts; journals devoted to individual philosophers and schools of philosophy
  • WWW Virtual Library -   Hosted by the University of Bristol (UK). This Virtual Library section is provided in collaboration with SOSIG, the Social Science Information Gateway,  offering access to thousands of high-quality Internet resources, each selected and described by academic librarians and subject specialists.

Web Directories

There are excellent subject directories on the web. that can point you to the best online resources in specific areas of education. These human guides to the Internet are a great way to find the best of the Web, and often find sites that can't be accessed by search engines. The best ones to use in education for scholarly material are:

  • IPL2 - Carefully chosen links to thousands of the best Websites for research information. You can search sections divided by Resources by Subject, Newspapers and Magazines, or Special Collections Created by the IPL2 – or simply enter your topic in the search box. Site formed by the Jan. 2010 merger of the Internet Public Library [IPL] and Librarians Internet Index [LII].
  • InfoMine - Virtual library of scholarly Internet resources. Features well organized access; notable for its collection of annotated and indexed links.
  • Academic Info - gateway to freely available academic resources on the web, with annotated entries. General links, related topics, in the news sections.
