(Worcester, Mass.) -- Colombian labor activist Hector Giraldo will deliver the lecture "Workers Rights as Human Rights" on the US-Colombia Free Trade Agreement, Wednesday, February 23, at 11:30 a.m. North/South Auditorium.

According to Giraldo, there is a campaign of intimidation aimed at workers and unions in Colombia, who are trying to end repression and protect workers rights. He says that, sine the 1980's, over 3,800 union members and activists have lost their lives.

Giraldo, who is the Secretary-General of the Union for Workers and Employees of Antioquia Department that organizes public sector workers, has been championing the rights of workers in Colombia and consequently has received numerous threats to his life. For his safety, Mr. Giraldo left Colombia for a year and traveled through the U.S., raising awareness to the plight of the Colombians and educating Americans about how the U.S. funded Plan Colombia, which supports the paramilitary violence that has threatened his life and those of his countrymen.
