(Worcester, Mass.)--The Gallery at Worcester State University will reopen after its renovation with the show, “The Global Perspective: Understanding the Past, Looking to the Future,” October 20 through December 1.
The exhibition, curated by Catherine Wilcox-Titus, will showcase work that reflects the complexities of global connections and examines their costs and benefits. An opening reception will be held Thursday, Oct. 20 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm and is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Artists from all over the United States and Canada have represented such thematic concerns as the legacy of the Industrial Revolution, the impact of worldwide epidemics, the explosion of new imagery of our planet from satellite imagery, immigration, borders, and the changes on Main Streets everywhere as we experience shifting and uncertain economic global markets. Artists have given powerful visual expression to the tensions, challenges, and opportunities of our present moment.
“The Global Perspective,” is the Gallery’s response to Worcester State University’s theme semester, “Worcester and the World.” The Theme Semester is designed to promote integrative learning and to foster a sense of community and shared purpose through a series of events, lectures and course offerings. Jurors Kristina Durocher (Director of the University of New Hampshire Gallery, former curator of the Fitchburg Art Gallery), Anne LaPrade Seuthe (Director of the Hampden Gallery, University of Massachusetts, Amherst), and Lexi Lee Sullivan (Assistant Curator, the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum), narrowed the selection to 22 artists’ works in a variety of media, including painting, prints, drawing, and sculpture. Artist Mike Carroll, a documentary photographer with over 30 years experience, has two photographs juried into The Global Perspective about the conditions of Romanian orphanages in the wake of the AIDS epidemic. These photographs became known worldwide when he began this series two decades ago. He will be present October 24 at 7:00 p.m. for a screening in the Ghosh Science and Technology Building of the documentary Hand Held, after which he will conduct a Q & A session after the screening. For that evening only, 10 additional photographs of his imagery of the Romanian orphanages will be on view.
The Gallery is dedicated to exhibiting art of interest to the wider Massachusetts community and to contributing to the cultural offerings of central Massachusetts. The Gallery is situated on the first floor of the Ghosh Science and Technology Building, which faces onto Chandler Street on the Worcester State University campus at 486 Chandler Street, Worcester MA 01602.
