The Good Person of Setzuan by Bertolt Brecht will run November 17-20, 2011. From famed German playwright Bertolt Brecht, an allegory— filled with passion, music, and humor—about the ethical perils of economic success. Three gods in search of Good find it in the prostitute Shen Te and they thank her with 1000 silver coins. Her goodness gets in the way of her attempts to run a legitimate business, because she helps every unscrupulous beggar who comes her way. She invents and becomes her own hard-nosed, male cousin, Shui Ta...and is caught between her morality and economic survival.
The Weir by Conor McPherson will run February 23-26, 2012. In a rural Irish pub, the local men tell ghost stories, trying to impress a young woman who has recently moved into a “haunted” house. The tables are turned when she tells a tale of her own. Conor McPherson has received abundant praise for his rich, evocative writing, sensitively drawn characters, and chilling surprises in a play called “sheer theatrical magic” by London’s The Telegraph.
Dead Man's Cell Phone by Sarah Ruhl will run April 19-22, 2012. One of America’s freshest and most highly regarded young playwrights, Sarah Ruhl, presents us with a comedy tinged with magical realism. Dead Man’s Cell Phone explores human identity and the thin line that exists between life and death. When the man at the next table refuses to answer his cell phone, Jean discovers he is dead. Taking the phone, she becomes his self-appointed secretary and sets out to heal the rifts in his family – but on the way, finds that the real transformation may be within herself.
