NOTEWORTHY:

Stephanie Chalupka (Nursing) was the recipient of the 2011 Nurse Excellence Award. This award was in recognition for Professor Chalupka's research in occupational and environmental health. The award was presented in December at the Annual Meeting of the The New England College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. The New England College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine is a regional component society of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the pre-eminent organization of occupational and environmental physicians in the United States.



Heather Treseler (English) has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize for her publication of "Into the Apothecary," a four-part poem that appeared in Notre Dame Review in October, and a memoir essay "Lucie and Me." If chosen, one (or both) will be reprinted in a Pushcart Prize XXXVII: Best of the Small Presses in November of 2012. Treseler also has had two new poems accepted for publication in Boulevard, a national literary journal published by St. Louis University. These poems, "Collect Call" and "Letter of Law," include a moon rover, a rotary phone, and a cameo appearance of John Keats. On February 25, Treseler will be the featured reader at the Worcester County Poetry Association's reading series at the Barnes and Noble in Worcester at 7 p.m. All are welcome.



Catherine Wilcox-Titus (Visual & Performing Arts) will have her essay, "Napoleon and Lafayette in the Print Culture," included in a collection of essays to be published by the American Antiquarian Society titled With a French Accent: American Lithography to 1860, edited by Georgia Barnhill, Andrew W. Mellon Curator of Graphic Art at the American Antiquarian Society. Her essay examines how the production and distribution of print images of Napoleon and Lafayette reflected an expanded demand for affordable art and also helped grow the audience for fine art. Research was conducted at the American Antiquarian Society and based on the print holdings at the Society. Expected publication date is March 2012.

OT Students Helped Nicaraguan
Children Over Winter Break

As part of WSU's study abroad program, students in the Occupational Therapy (OT) program, Kristin Brezenski (MOT '12), Ashley J. Harvey '12 and Tracy Drogosek (MOT '12), and their professor, Jacqueline Brennan, took an eight-day trip to Nicaragua over winter break. The faculty-led trip was meant to expose the OT students to the culture of Nicaragua and to work at a school and clinic for children with severe disabilities. This is Brennan's fifth annual trip to Nicaragua to teach students how to put their occupational therapy skills to use outside of a classroom setting.

Brezenski said, "The people I worked with at the Teseros de Dios clinic taught me that as long as I treat people with great love and do the absolute best I can for them, this is what matters the most." The trip's purpose resonated with Brezenski. "The best moment of the trip was working with the kids in the clinic," she said.

Professor Brennan said that during the trip she and the OT students spent the weekdays at the Teseros de Dios Clinic with the Nicaraguan children and the weekend exploring the culture of Nicaragua.

Clinicians from Cleveland, Ohio also accompanied the WSU group to work in the clinics with the doctors of Nicaragua. A clinician from New York, who was specialized in wheelchair modification, also went with the group.

This trip was considered an independent study for the three OT students and was worth two credits. Meetings were held every other week in the Fall 2011 semester to prepare for the trip by learning therapy techniques. Each student also wrote a reflection paper about their trip and took many photographs of their experiences.


MLB Players Visit WSU Baseball Team

Chicago Cubs first baseman Bryan LaHair and two-time MLB draft pick Nate Nelson visited the Worcester State baseball practice on February 9 at the Auburn Sports Plex. Bryan is the older brother of Coach Jeff LaHair (2006 MASCAC Player of the Year). Nelson led the Lancers to the 2008 NCAA Tournament. All three former Holy Name graduates played together in high school.


WSU Celebrates National Wear Red Day

WSU's Director of Health Services Lisa Gaimari, MSN, ANP, BC, checks the blood sugar level of Catherine Goodwin, an ESL instructor for the Intensive English Language Institute for the University's observance of National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 3. The screenings were provided by Health Services. The office also hosted a speaker, Jill Terrien, Ph.D., APN-BC from UMASS Medical Center, who spoke about heart health.

Office of Diversity Workshop - February 16
The Office of Diversity/Affirmative Action and Compliance will be hosting a workshop on Thursday, February 16 at noon in the Student Center Fallon Room. The workshop "Sexual Harassment," will help attendees recognize the different forms of sexual harassment, and behaviors that are deemed inappropriate. Restocking the Pantry - Donations Needed
WSU Education students are taking a course in Diversity & Multicultural Education and are doing field work at the Sullivan Middle School in Worcester. The WSU students have learned that the food pantry there urgently needs to be restocked for the upcoming February vacation. WSU students are asking, on behalf of the students at Sullivan Middle School, for donations of food that can be dropped off in the Education Dept., Sullivan, Room 226, by noon on Thursday, February 16. Food items that the children most often select are rice, pasta, spaghetti sauce (canned or plastic; safer for transporting), Ramen noodles, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, crackers, canned goods (especially corn and potatoes, soup (especially with meat in them), baby food (several have very young siblings at home), bread, eggs and sausage links, American cheese, hot dogs and rolls, ground hamburger, hamburger rolls. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Call for Proposals, Undergrad Research Conference
The call for proposals of the 18th Annual Massachusetts Statewide Undergraduate Research Conference will take place on Friday, April 27, 2012 from 8:00 a.m. ? 5:00 p.m. at UMass Amherst. Encourage your students to showcase their best work and build their resumes. The presentations can include thesis research, independent study, community service, creative work and study abroad. A preliminary abstract is required and must be 250 words or less. The deadline to submit proposal abstracts is February 15, 2012. Worcester Computer Society Meeting
The Worcester Computer Society will host a meeting in the Student Center Foster Room on March 8 at 7 p.m. The meeting topic, "How to Edit, Print, Copy, Create and Distribute Your Digital Gold," will focus on uploading photos in order to have them sent to a print making store such as CVS, or to have them available to make into prints on your home photo printer.
