NOTEWORTHY
Congratulations to Instructor
Maryellen Brisbois (Nursing) on being awarded the Massachusetts
Association of Nursing (MACN) 2009 Early
Career Nursing Educator. This award is presented to a nursing faculty member
who is new to the role as a nursing educator. Instructor Brisbois began her
teaching career in fall 2007. A few of her exemplary accomplishments are as
follows: Implementing the triage class activity for senior nursing majors in
Community Health Nursing in fall 2007; Implementing the Cardboard Village
Project in Fall 2008: Seniors nursing majors slept overnight in cardboard boxes
with minimum supplies to learn about homelessness; Co-recipient of a WSC grant
to examine the use of PDAs (handheld palms) in the clinical setting.
Ellen Rearick (Nursing) was
selected as an Item Writer for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing
Licensure Examination (NCLEX). NCSBN, headquartered in Chicago, is
responsible for developing and administering the NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN licensing
exams. Rearick was approved by the Massachusetts Board of Nursing and selected
by NCSBN to participate on the NCLEX item development panel of subject matter
experts that was held in Chicago, Ill. on March 9-12. Rearick was one of 12
nurses from across the nation to be selected for this assignment. She was
nominated on the basis of clinical specialty and nursing expertise.

Over 250 Attend Hanover Fundraiser
for WSC Student Scholarships
Kimberly Brothers-Caisse
The
Rat Pack Is Back! transported over 250 WSC alumni, faculty, staff, and
friends back through time and space on Thursday, March 26 to a balmy night circa
1960 when four show-business legends, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey
Bishop, and Dean Martin, converged at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas for the first
time. It was the inaugural Worcester State College Night at The Hanover Theatre
for the Performing Arts, and proceeds benefited scholarships for WSC students.
Over 100 people, mostly members of the Class of 1969, gathered beforehand for a
special cocktail reception. This special fundraiser for student scholarships was
the brainchild of theatre co-owners Ed Madaus, M.Ed. ’72, whose wife, Margaret,
is a member of the Class of 1969, and Paul Demoga ’67.

FREE HEARING EVALUATION AT WSC CLINIC
Faculty, staff and students - Do you have to ask people
to repeat what they say before you can understand them? Do you often
turn your ear toward a sound to hear it better? Do you hear better when
you're looking directly at a speaker's face? Do you find it hard to
follow conversation when you're in a group of people?
These are signs of hearing
loss. Fortunately, treatment for hearing problems has never been better.
Even the slightest hearing loss can be treated. If you think you have
even a slight hearing problem, find out for sure. Schedule a hearing
evaluation appointment at the WSC Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic for a
Monday afternoon or a Wednesday morning by calling Susanna Meyer
at ext. 8562.
