Helen Shaughnessy was a true educator in the true sense of the word.  I count myself fortunate to have been one of her students.  Mrs. Shaughnessy gave me a great gift; a love for the teaching of reading.  She influenced me in ways she never knew, also the mark of a wonderful teacher.  I went on to get my master's in reading and spent 30 years teaching reading to almost all grade levels.  Though I am now retired, I volunteer in a first grade classroom teaching reading … she truly gave me the gift that keeps on giving.
I was in Mrs. Shaughnessy's classroom when the intercom interrupted class to give us the news of President Kennedy's assassination.  She was remarkable in the way she handled the great shock of the news and as she shared her feelings with us she cried … and gave us the opportunity to share our grief … she was such a warm and loving lady.
It always amazed me that whenever I ran into her throughout the years on the Cape or in Worcester she always remembered my name and always asked how the girls (in my section) were and what they were all doing.  I can't even imagine the number of lives she touched in such a positive way throughout her long career.  Helen Shaughnessy was an inspiration and I will never forget her sweet smile and the twinkle in her eye.
