At Worcester State University, the Sociology Department engages in public sociology. We strive to help our students develop insights about the workings of the social world and the influence of social structure. Our goal involves not just understanding the world but working to change it. This involves helping students uncover root causes of social problems and refine their personal understanding of social responsibility and economic justice. We embrace the goals of personal, community, and global citizenship. Ultimately, we strive to provide guidance and teaching designed to help students live better lives in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
As a department that engages in public sociology we are committed to:
- Teaching that stresses critical thinking joined with action.
- Advising our students by providing information about courses of study, and mentoring them to prepare for lifelong learning and meaningful careers.
- Scholarly work that encourages students and faculty to: collaborate with peers and partners in the community; contribute to the field by writing and presenting original scholarship in professional and public arenas; and which challenges students to meet the highest standards of scholarship.
- Service that prepares sociology graduates to act in complex settings at home and at work, in their communities and the world.
