Sports Teams and Events

In addition to being home to the Worcester Sharks and Tornadoes, you’ll find that most residents are fans of the state’s professional sports teams—New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins, and New England Revolution. Many also attend the annual Boston Marathon and the Head of the Charles Regatta.

about the Boston Marathon: Worcester State Alumnus Wilson
Kiriungi founded Run with Kenyans to celebrate Kenyan runners
and their remarkable history of achievement in distance running,
particularly the Boston Marathon. Ibrahim Hussein was the first
Kenyan to win the Boston Marathon in 1988. Two years later, in
1991, he won again. Ever since, a Kenyan has won the marathon.
Kiriungi’s mission is to build on the positive spirit of Kenyan
athletics, to promote goodwill, cultural exchange and economic
development, and to engage Kenyans in the Diaspora. Most of the
organization’s activities take place in Kenya, but it also participates
in big-city marathon expos in the U.S.
