The Office of University Advancement of Worcester State University was informed on Thursday, July 16, 2020, of an attempted ransomware attack involving one of its frequently used software products. The attempted breach was discovered and ultimately stopped by the software provider, Blackbaud.
Worcester State uses Blackbaud-hosted software for a variety of services related to fundraising and alumni engagement. These products are broadly used by colleges and universities throughout Massachusetts and the nation. The software that was part of the intrusion is not a financial system and does not gather nor keep credit card or banking record of alumni or donors.
The Office of University Advancement has always put the security of its alumni and donor information at the highest level of importance. In 2014, the Office of University Advancement enacted safety protocols that required any software utilized by the department which may have personal information fields be safeguarded with encryption.
Worcester State is pursuing details about this incident and will post updates to the website as information becomes available. The Office of University Advancement is confident that the financial data of its alumni or donors were not compromised in this incident.
