Ethical Standards and Confidentiality Policy
The professional staff of the Counseling Center adheres to the ethical standards of the American Counseling Association (ACA). While all of the ethical standards that guide practice are important, of particular weight are those ethical standards that speak to maintaining the confidentiality of counseling services.
- At the time of intake students are provided with a copy of the Counseling Center’s Informed Consent for Counseling form (a signed copy is placed in the student’s file).
- Subsequent conversations about confidentiality are held at the start of treatment and at other times during treatment where appropriate.
- In addition, the Counseling Center staff act in accordance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and, where applicable, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA).
