DESCRIPTION:Organization: HISTORY & POLITICAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENTEvent Locator: 2023-AARGDQ \nWorcester State University's History & Political Science department welcome guest speaker Dr. Ling Zhang who will introduce part of her new book\, 108 Meters in a talk titled\, "Seventy Meters Below Is My Home: Geotrauma and Earthly Memories of East China". \nThe Xin’an river valley in east China historically sustained an affluent society with a dense human population. When a major dam was installed in the river in the mid-twentieth century\, the valley experienced a dramatic transformation. The transformation was first and foremost geological. Following that was the changes to the physical\, socioeconomic\, and emotional relationships between people and the land that went under water. Seventy years have gone by. Mourning of the lost land has passed on across three generations. It has evolved into diverse forms and prompted different actions. The various earthly memories those men and women have made and continue making\, as my oral history and ethnography reveal\, are reshaping that watery world\, especially in the new historical context of environmental degradation\, resource shortage\, and climate change.

Worcester State student and poet Sophia D'Alleva will open the event with a reading from her poetry collection\, A Letter I Never Sent & Note to Self. \nSophia D’Alleva is from Newton Massachusetts. She is a rising senior at Worcester State University. After about 2 years of writing and editing\, in December 2022\, she self published her own collection of poetry. \nSince she was younger she has always loved writing and had the goal to publish a book. Creative writing has been her passion and she hopes to share her work to help others feel understood but also influence individuals to share their stories. Mr Greenough will also describe career paths in the State Department for Worcester State graduates\, and details the State Department's paid internship scheme. \nThis event is open to students from all majors. \nAndrew Greenough serves as a desk officer in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs’ Office of Eastern European Affairs\, where he focuses on Moldova and regional consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine. Prior to joining the office in 2021\, Greenough served at the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest\, Romania\, where he covered cybersecurity\, emerging technology\, and economic cooperation. A career Foreign Service Officer\, Greenough previously served at the U.S. Embassy in El Salvador.

DESCRIPTION:Organization: EDUCATION DEPARTMENT \nOrganize to Decolonize: How Can We Decolonize Community Engagement?\n \nWhat’s wrong with the benevolent notion of “doing good”? How does trying to “help” others may reproduce colonial paternalism? \nHow do we reflect on our own positionalities\, vulnerabilities\, and privileges as we engage with communities? \nHow do we responsibly work with (not for) diverse communities without reproducing white supremacy\, capitalism\, and heteropatriarchy? \n \nFeatured speakers\n \nÉl Martinez (they/elle) is a student activist based out of Boston\, MA. Having worked in legislative\, non-profit\, grassroots\, and public school settings\, Él's wealth of experience has equipped them with a deep and complex understanding of social change and valuable interpersonal skills. Their identity as a transgender person of color informs the insights they provide and the knowledge they bring to the community. \nBlue Nguyen (they/them) is a Vietnamese non-binary lesbian poet based out of Boston\, MA. They are an Aries/Taurus cusp in love with liminal spaces. They have been nominated for Best of the Net Anthology and Best New Poets Anthology. They are the author of “is the sun lonely too?” zine. Their poetry can be found at The Mantle Poetry\, Glass: A Journal of Poetry\, and forthcoming in Protean Magazine. \nMichael Illuzzi (he/him) is an associate professor of political science at Lesley University and director of the Lesley CLAS Honors Program\, which has a focus on critical community engagement. His research and teaching interests include American political development and political thought\, with a focus on issues of American peoplehood and racial\, gender\, and class inequalities. \nThe event will be facilitated by Nafisa Tanjeem\, Associate Professor\, Department of Interdisciplinary Studies\, Worcester State University.
