Do you need to learn or improve your English, but have a busy schedule? Try our Community ESL Program!

Worcester State University’s Intensive English Language Institute wants to help immigrants and visitors to the Massachusetts area enhance their English in all skill areas and thereby improving chances of obtaining better jobs and/or promotions.

Whether you arrived in the Worcester area recently or have lived in the United States for a few years, you can take classes to advance at work, prepare for college entry, or to better understand people around you.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The Community ESL Program has 3 equal semesters in the fall, spring, and summer. Classes are 12 weeks long and provide 48 classroom hours of instruction (60 for TOEFL iBT).

  • The Integrated Skills class has 4 levels of instruction. Conversation and Pronunciation, TOEFL iBT Preparation, English for Business, and Grammar through Writing are all one level—intermediate to advanced.

  • If you complete the semester to the satisfaction of your instructor, you will receive a certificate.

  • Yes. J-visa requirements for au pairs state that you must have 6 semester hours or an equivalent in an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution. Every 12 hours you spend in a classroom is equivalent to 1 college credit. Two semesters of Community ESL Program classes completely fulfills most au pair education requirements.

More Information

Determine your placement into 1 of 8 skill levels.

Low- to intermediate-level ESL learners are assigned to levels 1 - 4 and have the option of 4 levels of integrated skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar). Higher level ESL learners are assigned to levels 5 - 8 and can choose specialty classes to target particular areas of weakness. You will be assigned a level depending on the results of your placement test (see next item, "Register & take a placement test," for more information).

Register & take a placement test.

When you register for the Community ESL Program, you will be required to take a placement test to determine the class level that is best for you. Register now by clicking "Register & take a placement test" above.

Join a session in the fall, spring or summer.

You will find classes throughout the year—fall, spring, or summer—that are convenient and affordable. The program runs in the day and evening for 12 weeks.

Prepare to study & excel.

The program requires a commitment of 4 -5 hours of studying time each week at meetings (2 meetings per week) and after them.

Meet the requirement of au pair visas.

All of the classes with the Community ESL Program help fulfill the requirements of au pair visas.
