Operational Excellence Methodologies for Identifying Savings
As part of the Operational Excellence program at WSU, a consistent and transparent methodology is required to identify cost savings and cost avoidance related to Operational Excellence initiatives and activities.
Having accurate and transparent savings details will help inform stakeholders as to the progress of the initiative and will enable the Operational Excellence team to quantify the results of its efforts to gain efficiencies and avoid costs. Additionally, the cumulative savings identified through Operational Excellence activities and initiatives will help inform University budget activities and forecasting of future results.
Three Categories of Financial Impact as a Result of Operational Excellence :-
Financial Impact Calculations – Operational Excellence Reporting
Operational Excellence will track savings by Continuous Improvement (CI) project or Financial Sustainability Task Force (FSTF) initiative. The goal is to identify cost savings, cost avoidance or revenue enhancement for each Operational Excellence project or initiative.
The Operational Excellence team maintains project information sheets for each project or initiative. These information sheets contain a section on financial impacts – capturing savings/cost avoidance or revenue enhancement. The financial section on each information sheet typically has a detailed calculations page where the detailed cost savings/cost avoidance or revenue enhancement calculations are shown. The methodology of calculations may differ from project to project based upon known variables, cost drivers, inputs, assumptions, etc.
The cost savings/cost avoidance or revenue enhancement total figures captured on the project/initiative information sheets are reported on the Operational Excellence Gantt charts. These Gantt charts display ongoing projects at a summary view for reference.
Finally, it is the intent of Operational Excellence to make available a summary figure of consolidated cost savings/cost avoidance and revenue enhancement – collectively the Financial Impact of OpEx–for public view via the Operational Excellence website.
This total will be the total since inception based on the methodology outlined above and will typically be updated twice per fiscal year on the website with project data available at that time.
