ISLA - INNOVATIVE SERVICES FOR LATINO ACHIEVERS

ISLA offers a comprehensive after-school program tailored to young English language learners from elementary school, from 1st to 5th grade. The program encompasses well-rounded homew

ork assistance with  strong emphasis in literacy and math tutoring combined with problem solving and social-emotional learning activities.

The homework assistance sessions are delivered by culturally competent bilingual staff to address the academic achievement gap for many Latinx/BIPOC  students. The culturally relevant instruction addresses disparities, and bilingual teaching strengthens student bonds and success.  Learners at all levels of math and English language proficiency are provided 1:1 support with tailored learning tools.  College students serve as academic assistants and mentors.  Additional support is provided through family engagement activities through LEI’s Parent Engagement Navigation Services to foster a supportive learning environment beyond the classroom.

ISLA was designed to achieve four specific goals for our elementary students: (1)  improve numeracy and rudimentary mathematics skills, (2)  improve English literacy, (3) enhance socio-emotional well-being (4)  and connect families more closely to school by expanding parents/caregivers’ engagement and leadership skills.
