Bio

Dr. Moattari completed his M.D. degree as a general practitioner, a Certificate in Integrated Environmental Management from Brown University, and a Doctor of Public Health in international health from Boston University.  He is currently an associate professor at the Department of Health Sciences at Worcester State University. He has expertise in the following subject areas: global health, environmental health, and Non-Profit Organizations. He also has an extensive background in the following methodologies: community-based participatory program development and participatory learning and action methodology. Dr. Moattari has worked in the US and internationally with several organizations, including but not limited to Brown University, the University of Florida, Boston University, Northeastern University, the Harvard Initiative for Global Health, the Small Grants Program of the Global Environmental Facility (SGP.GEF), United Nations, and the Worcester State University. He is currently working on Urban Health issues with particular attention to violence and injury prevention in urban settings.

2019 George I. Alden Excellence in Teaching Award

The Center for Teaching and Learning has created the George I. Alden Excellence in Teaching Awards as a means to provide the University with the opportunity to publicly acknowledge professors who have made a difference in students’ lives through their teaching excellence.

Moattari Co-Authored Study Finds Mask Mandates Reduce COVID-19 Deaths January 18, 2022

Syamak Moattari, MD, DrPH, associate professor in the Health Sciences Department, along with an international group of his colleagues have published a paper titled Modeling COVID-19 Mortality Across 44 Countries: Face Covering May Reduce Deaths in the prestigious American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Moattari and Murphy Receive 2019 Alden Teaching Awards

Assistant Professor Syamak Moattari, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the Health Sciences Department and Assistant Professor Timothy Murphy, Ph.D., of the Urban Studies Department received the 2019 George I. Alden Excellence in Teaching Award in recognition of their exceptional teaching, scholarship, and leadership. This honor was presented to them at the Employee Service Recognition and Retirement Celebration, held on Wednesday, May 8.

Students are not empty vessels to receive knowledge, but should be full participants in academic inquiry, according to Timothy Murphy, Ph.D., associate professor in the of Urban Studies, and Syamak Moattari, M.D., D.Phil., associate professor of health sciences. The two winners of the 2019 Alden Excellence in Teaching Award gave a joint talk on Friday, Nov. 13, via Zoom, discussing “Community-Based Participatory Learning and Action.”

Students Help Provide Care to El Salvador Residents

A group of Worcester State nursing and public health students traveled to a rural area of El Salvador in May to help deliver health care to its impoverished residents and saw firsthand the challenges they face every day.
