What happens when international platforms both empower and exclude? And what can this history teach us about resisting authoritarian nationalism today?

Dr. Mitra traces the rise of internationalism focused on women from powerful gatherings of Third World women at UN conferences, showing how internationalism offered alternatives to postcolonial authoritarian regimes. Yet, as these spaces expanded, many decolonial feminist visions were sidelined.

Dr. Durba Mitra is the author of “The Future That Was: A History of Third World Feminism Against Authoritarianism.”
