Having a well-defined social media strategy can make all the difference in how well you are able to achieve your goals with your social media platforms. Here’s how you can create an effective social media strategy for your university-affiliated accounts.

See below for social media strategy templates for you to use!

1) Set clear goals and objectives

Before diving into the world of creating content and posts, define what you want to achieve. Are you looking to increase attendance at your events? Attract more students to your program? Drive traffic to your webpage? Or improve communication with students? Whatever it is, knowing your goals and objectives will shape the rest of your strategy.

2) Know your audience

Understanding your target audience is crucial. Research their demographics, interests, behaviors, and pain points. This knowledge will guide your content creation and help you tailor your messages to resonate with your audience.

3) Choose the right platforms

Not all social media platforms are created equal. Each has its own user demographics, content formats, and engagement levels. Select platforms where your target audience is most active and where your content will resonate best. If you are speaking to multiple audiences, you may need to target them using different platforms.

  • Consistency Over Quantity: A strong, consistent presence on one network (like Instagram) is better than an inconsistent presence across multiple channels.
  • Resource Consideration: Ensure you have the time and resources to produce the content needed for the platforms you choose. For example, TikTok demands more effort to generate and edit video content, whereas other platforms may be less resource-intensive.
4) Create compelling content

Content is at the heart of social media. Content is defined as any information shared on social media platforms, such as text, images, and videos. Develop a content strategy that includes a mix of different media types. Ensure the content you’re posting is valuable, relevant, and consistent with the voice you develop for your accounts. Remember that everything you post should be intentional and aligned with your goals.

5) Engage and Interact

Social media is about being social. Don’t just broadcast messages; actively engage with your audience. Respond to comments, ask questions, run polls, and participate in conversations relevant to your department, office, or organization.

6) Schedule and Monitor

Consistency is key to success on social media. Use scheduling tools to plan your posts in advance and maintain a regular posting schedule. There are many scheduling platforms available, such as Agorapulse (used by the marketing team), Hootsuite, Sprout Social, and HubSpot. If your department doesn’t have the budget for these services, don’t worry; you can schedule content organically through most platforms, including Facebook (through Meta Business Suite), Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok (desktop version).

  • Scheduling Tips: Scheduling tools allow you to get content posted on weekends, holidays, and outside of work hours. Make note of when these posts will go out to ensure everything is published correctly and no edits are needed.
  • Monitor Performance: After your posts have been published, monitor their performance using the analytics tools provided by each platform. For more information, visit our blog, “A Guide to Measuring Social Media Success.”
7) Evaluate and Adapt

Social media trends and algorithms change frequently. Regularly evaluate your content’s performance against your goals. Be ready to adapt and refine your approach based on insights gained from analytics and feedback.

8) Stay Authentic

Authenticity builds favor with your audience. Be genuine in your interactions and create content that isn’t overly market-y. People connect with authenticity and are more likely to engage with content that feels real.

  • While everything posted to your accounts should be high-quality, it doesn’t always have to be perfectly refined. Posting reels, TikToks, and account takeovers that aren’t perfectly polished can showcase the authenticity of your content. Not everything needs to be a polished marketing piece.
  • Sharing testimonials from students or members of your department or group can provide genuine insights and experiences.
9) Experiment and Try New Things

Don’t be afraid to try new ideas and explore different formats for presenting your content. Social media is a dynamic environment, and innovation helps your content stand out. Test new strategies, measure results, and iterate based on what you learn.

10) Stay Updated

Stay informed about the latest social media trends, changes, and best practices. Follow industry experts, join relevant communities, and continue learning.
