CENTRAL MASSACHUSETTS’ FUTURE STARTS HERE

Worcester State University was built to answer a workforce need. A growing Commonwealth needed teachers, and the state built a school to prepare them. A century and a half later, the professions have changed and our mission has not. Central Massachusetts now needs nurses, scientists, and skilled professionals faster than the region can educate them, and the university's labs, scholarships, and facilities were built for a smaller moment. Together, we can make sure that where a student starts never decides how far they can go.

A COMMUNITY ANCHOR FOR
CENTRAL MASSACHUSETTS

Worcester State proves that public higher education can be both excellent and inclusive.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

WE BELIEVE IN WHAT'S NEXT.

Every year, I meet students who arrive knowing exactly where they want to go. And every year, I meet students who find a purpose here larger than the one they came with, in a lab, in a mentor's office, in a leadership program. Central Massachusetts needs more of both than we can graduate.

Believe in Beyond is our answer, and yours: a $30 million effort to give the region the nurses, scientists, and leaders who will lift its future. I believe in what these students become. I am asking you to believe in it with us.

— Barry M. Maloney, President

TO MEET THIS MOMENT, THE CAMPAIGN WILL
ADVANCE THREE STRATEGIC PRIORITIES
ACROSS THE REGION.

THE OPPORTUNITY GATEWAY FOR EVERY STUDENT

Talent, not income, should decide who enrolls and who graduates. Your partnership builds the scholarship endowment, paid internships, and first-generation support that keep a talented student enrolled straight through to commencement.

THE EDUCATION INNOVATOR FOR CENTRAL MASSACHUSETTS

Central Massachusetts needs more health-care workers, scientists, and skilled professionals than it can hire. Your investment funds the labs, research capacity, and programs that prepare them, and keeps that talent in the region.

CAMPAIGN STORIES AND NEWS

Progress, people, and the gifts moving the campaign forward.

A Vision for the Future

Growing up in Worcester after emigrating from Kenya, Roy Karanja ’27 watched his parents build a life for their family as certified nursing assistants. Even at an early age, he understood the work his parents were doing was about more than a paycheck. They were doing good in their community, and Karanja found inspiration in that. In fact, it was his parents’ dedication to caring for others that sparked his own interest in healthcare.

Balance on the Court, in the Classroom and Beyond

On any given day, senior Mia Haynes might be found driving to the hoop as a starting guard on Worcester State’s women’s basketball team. If not in the gym, she might be organizing faith-based fun on campus as president of the Christian Fellowship Club. When she’s not fulfilling her duties as either an athlete or club leader, she’s most likely deep in reading, as required of any English major with aspirations of becoming an educator.

25 Years on, Jill Bilodeau's Legacy Continues to Shape Local Healthcare Landscape

In September 2001, the Worcester State University nursing community lost one of its brightest stars. Jill Ann Bilodeau was a junior in the nursing program, known by peers and faculty alike for her fierce determination and an unwavering career goal: she was going to wear the uniform of a Life Flight nurse, saving lives aboard the UMass/Memorial emergency helicopter.

Nursing Graduate Supports Caregivers of the Future

When Emily Spearin graduated from Worcester State University’s nursing program in spring 2026, she took with her more than memories, friendships, and a hard-earned degree. She also left something behind: a legacy of support that will empower future nursing students for years to come.

Expanding Access to Experiential Learning Opportunities

For many Worcester State University students, experiential learning opportunities—such as internships, student teaching placements, practicums, and community-based learning experiences—serve as a bridge between the classroom and a future career. These hands-on experiences allow students to apply what they have learned, build professional networks, and gain confidence in their chosen fields.
