Data Privacy and Security with Microsoft Copilot

Worcester State University’s use of Microsoft 365 Education includes enterprise-grade protections that extend to Copilot. This ensures your data is handled securely and privately, distinct from how data is managed in consumer-grade Microsoft accounts.

Here is a breakdown of how your data is protected when you use Copilot through your Worcester State account:

  • Your Data Stays Within the University’s Microsoft 365 Environment: The content you enter into Copilot prompts, as well as the AI-generated responses, remain within the university’s secure Microsoft 365 tenant. This data is not shared with other users or external organizations.
  • No Use for AI Model Training: Your data including prompts, responses, and accessed content  is not used to train or improve Microsoft’s foundation models. Copilot for Microsoft 365 is designed to respect organizational boundaries and data ownership.
  • No Human Review: The interactions you have with Copilot are not reviewed by humans. Microsoft’s automated systems enforce privacy and safety without human oversight of individual conversations.
  • Inherited Security and Compliance Standards: Copilot is fully integrated into Microsoft 365, inheriting the same security, compliance, and governance policies that protect your data in Outlook, Word, Excel, and SharePoint. This includes encryption at rest and in transit, sensitivity labels, and data loss prevention policies.
  • Admin-Controlled Access and Oversight: Worcester State’s IT administrators have granular control over who can access Copilot features. They can manage permissions, monitor usage, and enforce compliance across departments using Microsoft Purview and other built-in tools.

 

Accessing Microsoft Copilot at Worcester State

Access to Microsoft Copilot and other AI-powered features within Microsoft 365 is managed by Worcester State’s Microsoft 365 administrators. To see which features are available to you, follow these steps:

Sign in to your Worcester State Microsoft 365 account
Use your university credentials to log in and open apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or Teams.

Check for Copilot within Microsoft 365 apps
Look for the Copilot icon or sidebar in supported applications. You may see options like “Ask Copilot” or “Draft with Copilot.”
