Abstract: The principles of project-based learning and Universal Design for Learning overlap in significant ways that when combined can improve student success in the classroom. Project-based learning incorporates student interests, encourages student choice and metacognition, and allows for multiple ways of communicating mastery. Moreover, it helps students to connect prior knowledge with new information, further enhancing student success. By drawing from Universal Design for Learning principles when designing curriculum, instructors create more successful classrooms for their students. This article reviews current Universal Design for Learning and project-based learning research, shows the relationship between the two ideologies, and reflects on a classroom design influenced by the primary elements of Universal Design for Learning and project-based learning.
