    • The State of Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing (BORN)  conducts reviews and issues program approvals annually for all undergraduate nursing programs.
    • On June 13, 2025, Worcester State’s baccalaureate prelicensure programs were placed on approval with warning status. That means our programs are approved, but qualified with a warning status pending completion of recommendations.
    • During this status period, the Department of Nursing will accomplish a series of administrative and programmatic actions to ensure compliance with state requirements.
    • The university will submit required progress reports to the BORN in August, October, and December 2025.
    • Approval with warning status will continue through at least December of 2025.
  • The Worcester State Department of Nursing and prelicensure programs remain fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

  • The Nursing Department, with full support from university leadership, is working to swiftly take action and ensure compliance with the BORN. The university views this as an opportunity to strengthen the programs. Over the coming months, the Nursing Department will put together action plans to address the recommendations and keep the BORN updated on our progress with reports in August, October, and December.

All nursing programs undergo continuous internal and external improvement processes. For example, this process has highlighted ways we can more fully digitize administrative procedures to inform ongoing improvement. We are fully committed to working with our faculty and with BORN to implement an action plan that will make our baccalaureate nursing programs stronger and even more competitive.

  • Yes. This status does not impact students who successfully complete the undergraduate pre-licensure programs to take the NCLEX-RN exam.

  • No. This status will have no impact on nursing degree requirements for incoming or current students.

Students may notice some improvements of some components of courses, for example, updates to the clinical evaluation tool to more clearly reflect both the course and program learning outcomes/goals.

  • The Worcester State Department of Nursing remains one of the state’s top nursing programs, with an NCLEX passing rate of 96% in 2024 and a five-year average NCLEX pass rate of 95.4% that consistently exceeds the national pass rates. Graduates of our baccalaureate nursing program are highly sought after by top-tier hospitals and health care organizations. Our graduates continue to succeed in advanced nursing graduate programs around the country.

  • Contact Associate Dean of Nursing Catherine Thomas or Department Chair William Chadbourne at nursing@worcester.edu or call the department at 508-929-8129.
