• Mathematics

As a student in the Mathematics Department at Worcester State University, you will establish a strong foundation in the principles of mathematics. You also will develop important analytical and problem-solving skills that are relevant to a wide range of disciplines and careers. Under the guidance of our highly trained faculty, you’ll explore important mathematical theories in courses like calculus, abstract algebra, and probability and statistics.

  • Beyond the classroom, you’ll have many opportunities to put your passion for numbers into practice conducting meaningful research alongside your professors. In addition to participating in local mathematics competitions, you can attend mathematical and professional talks presented by the Math Club and tutor your peers at the Math Center.
Whatever your career goals, our department will tailor your education to fit your needs. If you are planning to specialize in an area of interest, we offer concentrations in secondary mathematics education and statistics and modeling. We also offer minors in financial mathematics and middle school mathematics. Through our Mathematics for Elementary Education major—the only degree program of its kind in Massachusetts—you can take advantage of our leadership in K-12 math education by pursuing a career as a teacher in grades 1-6. The program has been recognized in the National Council on Teacher Quality's 2016 Landscapes in Teacher Prep report as one of nine programs that earned an A+ for covering 90 percent of essential elementary-level topics in numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, and data analysis (and probability).
