Each year, the Orientation program welcomes over 800 new students to Worcester State and the Lancer community. Our Orientation Leaders (OLs) serve as ambassadors and mentors for all incoming students and their families, facilitating workshops, leading groups, and participating in panels to help ease the transition from high school to college. During the summer and fall programs, Orientation Leaders work closely with their group of first-year students, showing them around campus and leading them through a comprehensive orientation program.

Applications for 2026 Orientation Leaders will open January 26.

Applying to be an Orientation Leader

Group Process

The first part of the OL hiring process is Group Process. This mandatory group interview provides you an opportunity to showcase how you work in a group setting. Over the course of three hours, you will participate in ice breakers, small-group initiatives, and a Q&A session.
Group Process will be held on Friday, February 27, 2026.

Individual Interviews

All students who complete an application to be an Orientation Leader and meet all requirements will be required to participate in an individual interview. During your individual interview, you will meet either virtually or in person with members of the Orientation professional staff, who will ask questions about your related skills and experience and interest in the OL position.
Individual Interviews will be held March 3-12, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Three two-day Orientation sessions are scheduled for June 17/18, June 22/23, and June 25/26. For planning purposes, please plan to be on campus for the entire month of June, which will include both a training portion and the program dates.
  • Orientation Leaders are paid throughout the program, and along with free, on-campus housing during the month of June, students gain experience in large-scale programming and event planning. They also gain skills in group facilitation, time management, public speaking, and group management techniques. Many of our OL alumni speak to the numerous skills they learned during their time as an Orientation Leader.
  • Students who are interested in applying to be an OL should be able to work both independently and as a team to take initiative, be an effective and clear communicator with peers, new students, and parents, and demonstrate flexibility, creativity, humor, and dedication. OL applicants should also possess a high level of maturity and an ability to use independent judgement in decision making. Above all, OLs are required to maintain a high level of enthusiasm and stamina while working long days, and be open to learning and challenging themselves to grow into their leadership capacities.
  • All OL applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student, have a cumulative GPA of 2.3 or higher, be free of any current/pending judicial action by the University, and live on campus for the month of June.
  • Students who are hired as an Orientation Leader are expected to attend spring meetings (dates TBD). Training and the Orientation program happens during the month of June. The specific move-in date will be shared during the interview period. Additional dates include Transfer Orientation and First Year Move In.
  • Between training, programs, and spending time with your fellow OLs, there’s not too much time to spare! Students hired for the OL position are expected to dedicate Sunday through Friday evenings to the Orientation program. If you have another job, you are able to work on Saturday and Sunday, but must make sure you have returned to campus by the pre-determined time on Sunday evening.
  • Yes, you will be living on campus in a residence hall. Housing will be free during training and the program. Some meals will be provided; more details will be shared prior to the month of June.
