Enhance your career with a history minor.

Get an understanding of history as both a professional field and a scholarly discipline with the minor in history. A history minor offers you the flexibility and opportunity to dig deeper and follow your interests and passions. Turn a love of history and politics into a career path in a variety of fields, including law, museum work, archival work, National Park Service, private institutions, interpretive historical sites, and government jobs from the state department to city hall. You will gain valuable skills in research, writing, presentation, and analysis, and you will learn to see the big picture without losing sight of important details. You can also incorporate hands-on, experiential learning through an internship or practicum. Focus on your interests with 15 credits of electives.

An introduction to the history of groups and countries within Africa from 1800 to the early 21st century. Like the rest of the world, Africa was also changing rapidly during these centuries. Topics include the extraction of wealth, European colonial rule, independence and development during the Cold War, and Africa today.

HI-280 Introduction to African Diaspora History

Students learn about the development of the African diaspora and how it has shaped the world since antiquity. The course considers the movements, experiences, and exploits of ordinary people and celebrated figures of African descent through such topics as imperial expansion; slavery, resistance, and freedom; nationalism and the civil rights movement; and current global issues.

This course looks at changes in popular music in Africa since the late 19th century. Instead of studying the practice of traditional art or music in Africa, students gain a stronger understanding of the significance of global connections between Africa and other parts of the world by examining the performance of popular music in a variety of spaces, including streets, nightclubs, and ceremonies.
