The Certificate in Civic & Community Engagement is a hands-on program from the Binienda Center for Civic Engagement that gives you the opportunity to make a difference in your community while building skills you can use in college, your career, and beyond.
You’ll complete 40 hours of civic and community engagement over one academic year—including community-based service, interactive learning, reflection, and a final presentation.
Best of all, there’s no additional academic credit or course required. The certificate is designed to fit alongside your major, minor and other commitments while giving you meaningful experience that will appear on your WSU transcript.

The certificate includes 40 hours of engagement completed over one academic year:
Get introduced to the program, community engagement, and the opportunities available through the Binienda Center.
Explore topics including:
Community engagement and volunteering Civic discourse and dialogue
Modules combine flexible online learning with interactive sessions.
Complete 30 hours of service with a community organization or Binienda Center partner. We’ll help connect you with opportunities through WooServe and the Center’s community partner network.
Attend one Binienda Center Speaker Series event and engage with a guest speaker or civic leader.
Reflect on what you’ve learned and share your experience through a short presentation at a Binienda Center celebration or WSU’s Celebration of Scholarship & Creativity.
Any Worcester State undergraduate student!
You don’t need to be a political science major—or even someone who has taken a civic engagement course. Whether you’re interested in education, healthcare, business, the arts, social services, environmental issues, or something else entirely, the certificate gives you a way to connect your academic interests with your community.
It’s especially useful if you want hands-on experience without adding another course to your schedule.
There are two opportunities to join each academic year:
Fall: Open enrollment from September 15 to September 30th Spring: Enrollment begins January 19th to February 1st
You’ll have one academic year (two semesters) to complete the certificate requirements.
